The Making of Angel’s Envy Vol. 5: A Masterful Blend of Rye and Tequila Influence
To craft the distinct profile of Vol. 5 Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in French Oak Extra Añejo Tequila Barrels, Angel’s Envy’s Master Distiller Owen Martin went to extraordinary lengths. The journey began with Straight Rye Whiskey aged for up to 7 years, which was then finished for up to 12 months in French Oak barrels previously used to age Extra Añejo Tequila. This finishing process imparts a unique depth and complexity to the whiskey, drawing out rich flavors from the tequila barrels while maintaining the integrity of the rye.
But Martin didn’t stop there. To ensure a truly balanced and sophisticated flavor profile, he blended the aged rye with a select portion of an older Straight Rye Whiskey that had been aged for over 11 years. This careful blending helped to lock together the whiskey’s diverse flavors, creating a final product that is both layered and harmonious.
In a nod to the tequila influence, Martin traveled to Hacienda PATRÓN in Jalisco, Mexico, the home of PATRÓN Tequila’s distillery, where he hand-selected the barrels. Immersing himself in the craft of tequila making, Martin sought out the perfect barrels to complement the aging process, ultimately elevating this release to a new level of excellence.
The result is a whiskey that brings together the best of both worlds: the bold character of rye and the smooth, nuanced influence of Extra Añejo Tequila, offering an unforgettable tasting experience.
“This launch is very special to me as the first Cellar Collection innovation for ANGEL’S ENVY that I oversaw from beginning to end…”
Owen Martin
Master Distiller
“…As a part of the vision, we collaborated with PATRÓN Tequila’s Master Distiller, David Rodriguez, to identify a parallel between the production processes. We are always striving to showcase the unique character of a finishing cask and how it can amplify our base whiskey’s dynamic flavor – this release embodies that particularly well,” said Owen Martin, Master Distiller.
