It’s that time of the year again and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

There is always a ton of pushback on these kinds of consumer targeted holidays, a new gripe is thrown in every year but why not just embrace it? The news cycles are dire, the world is changing so quickly, why not just grab ahold of this silly tradition and go with it, have fun, the other 75% of the world is.

Jill Scott is a three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, New York Times best-selling poet, critically acclaimed actor, and multimedia entrepreneur.

She released her much-anticipated debut record, “Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1,” in July 2000, which became a double platinum album that earned Scott several Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist.

What started as the 20th-anniversary tour of Jill Scott’s chart-topping, genre-defining album, Who Is Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol I in 2020 ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scott will play the iconic album front to back, with hits from her iconic debut album, such as “Gettin’ in the Way,” “A Long Walk” and other musical stories. The tour, produced by Live Nation Urban, will play in over 20 markets across the country, with special multi-show residencies in Washington, D.C. at the MGM National Harbor on Mother’s Day weekend and Scott’s hometown of Philadelphia at The MET Philadelphia, marking the first time the North Philadelphia native will play at the storied North Philadelphia venue.

The Philadelphia stop also includes a fundraiser at the Arden Theatre in support of her non-profit, the Blues Babe Foundation.

“My band and I were so excited three years ago, but that damn COVID shut us down,” said Scott.

Though Scott had to pause performances during the pandemic, she celebrated the milestone virtually and continued building her brand as a multimedia entrepreneur, launching “Jill Scott Presents: J.ill the Podcast” in November 2020 alongside co-hosts Laiya St.Clair and Aja Graydon-Dantzler. The universally-loved podcast currently has 80 episodes and continues to grow in popularity and influence. Scott also participated in the first woman vs. woman Verzuz battle in May 2020, starred in Lifetime’s Highway to Heaven and BET+’s The First Wives Club, and in September 2021, she became the face of Nationwide, bringing a fresh take on a familiar campaign and putting her soulful spin on the iconic jingle.

Thanksgiving is coming up fast, and you just have a few days left, do not panic just yet.

Most people are not “hosting” a Thanksgiving; instead, they are guests. Whether its family, friends, or you are the plus one, it is always better to make a good impression – and what better way than with an exceptional wine or two?

Wine can be inexpensive; our winemaker suggested a few wines between $15-$45.

Brian Cheesborough has more than 20 vintages of wine experience and made 90+ point wines in 6 different regions worldwide (California, France, New Zealand, Argentina, and more). He is an expert at pairing flavors and (more importantly) how to fix sour or off flavors – think dry turkey. (yikes!)

Thanks for having me. I’m excited to share these ideas because there are two goals: if the food is incredible, we want a wine that matches it and makes it even better (think like a dancing partner), and secondly, if the food is not great, we want a way to elevate the experience and fix the mistake.

Wine can do that! Most of these wines are from vineyards I have worked with or fellow Fresno State alums, some of whom I sat in a lecture with about all things wine. Can’t find the exact bottle? There are numerous producers for these wines under $50 and some below $20 – follow the varietals.

So, let us get started.

Alexander Valley Vineyards – Gewürz, 2021 Mendocino County

This Gewürz can solve many problems. It is a great wine to start the night; It’s also great when you’re eating something dry or bland. Yes, it is on the sweeter side. The aromatics are floral, with enticing notes of apple, grapefruit, and citrus; the mouth is silky and rich. This will pair well with any course. I like it with turkey best!

Willamette Valley Vineyards 2021 Estate Chardonnay

Another great option to start the party. The nose is a fresh bouquet of apricot, lemon, lime, and honey. The mouth is rich and supple with flavors of golden apple, caramel, and vanilla, with a nice round, refreshing finish. You can easily pair this with rich seafood dishes like shrimp alfredo and crab-stuffed lobster tail. Also, creamy potatoes or spiced pumpkins. (If you end up with pumpkin or squash on your plate and try a glass of this, you will thank me later.)

Pine Ridge Vineyards 2021 Chenin Blanc + Viognier White Blend

One more light suggestion to start off your feast! This is crisp, bright, and full of life. The nose is a bouquet of honeysuckle, and orange blossoms, with a twist of ginger spice. The mouth is full-bodied with refreshing acidity. Flavors of tangerine, lime, and green apple. It’ll pair great with a light salad, goat cheese, and olives.

Abacela Tempranillo Fiesta 2019

It has a gorgeous fruit-driven nose with aromas of red fruit, cherry, and plum. The mouth is sleek and silky, medium body with flavors of black currant and blueberry, with lush and velvety tannins. It would pair well with turkey, venison with traditional gravy, or cranberry.

Dutton-Goldfield’s 2020 Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir

The nose starts telling you this is something extra special; classic rich blackberry, pomegranate, and a touch of vanilla to round out the aromas. The mouth is super juicy and decadent, full of bright red cherry and cola with a baking spice finish. You want this with your main entree – turkey, ham, and stuffing. The people at your party drinking this will be glancing at each other, smiling between bites – they will know why!

Porter Creek, Estate Pinot Noir, Russian River – 2019

On the nose, red fruit notes with cherry and plum. On the mouth, medium body with moderate oak, black currant, and blueberry, with delicate tannins. This pairs well with lean meat.

The critical thing to remember is that regardless of your budget, you can find a great flavor to pair with what you are eating. Also, the wine can “save” the day, just in case it ends up a little (or a lot) dry or bland. You are not the chef du jour for Thanksgiving, but you can still contribute to the sharing.

Taylor Swift launches “Eras Tour” plays Philly May 12-13

Taylor Swift launches her “Eras Tour” in March 2023, with national tour dates set through August and to include two shows each in both the New York metro area and Los Angeles as well as a show in Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field.

Swift announced the tour dates today on Instagram. International dates will be announced later.

“I’m enchanted to announce my next tour:

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour

a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!),”

she wrote on instagram.

“The first leg of the tour will be in stadiums across the US, with international dates to be announced as soon as we can!”

Swift also announced that her opening acts on the tour will include Paramore, Haim, Phoebe Bridgers, Beabadoobee, Girl in Red, Muna, Gayle, Gracie Abrams and Owenn.

“Feeling like the luckiest person alive because I get to take these brilliant artists out on tour with me,” she wrote.

“I can’t WAIT to see your gorgeous faces out there.

It’s been a long time coming.”

The tour kicks off March 18 in Glendale, AZ, where Swift launched her “Reputation” tour in 2018. Over the spring and summer, Swift will play 20 cities for 27 dates, including May 26 and 27 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, outside NYC, and wrapping up for a two-night stand Aug 4-5 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Brian premiered his second Netflix stand-up special, Brian Regan: On The Rocks, on February 23, 2021. Brian’s first Netflix special, Brian Regan: Nunchucks And Flamethrowers, premiered to rave reviews on November 21, 2017, and is also available as a vinyl album.

Cristina Martinez wins James Beard award for best Mid-Atlantic chef

Restauranteur Cristina Martinez opened South Philly Barbacoa as a food cart 5 years after moving to Philadelphia from Mexico.

Christina Martinez, the Passyunk Square restauranteur known for her lamb dishes, now named the best chef in the Mid-Atlantic region by the James Beard Foundation.

Martinez, who opened South Philly Barbacoa as a food cart in 2014, was honored at the foundation’s ceremony in Chicago. South Philly Barbacoa has become famous for its barbacoa tacos and lamb and chickpea consomme.

The restauranteur, a native of Capulhuac, Mexico – arrived in Philadelphia in 2009. She began working as a pastry chef at Amis in Center City where she met her now-husband and business partner Ben Miller.

Martinez, who is an undocumented immigrant, was fired after the company learned of her illegal status in 2014. That firing sparked her to begin working on the concept that would become South Philly Barbacoa.

She became an activist for the undocumented immigrant community, sharing her experience on “Mejor vete, Cristina,” a Spanish-language podcast about her life.

Martinez also helped create a support group called the Popular Alliance For Undocumented Workers Rights which provided meals and support during the pandemic.

South Philly Barbacoa moved quickly, and in 2017 Martinez received her first James Beard nomination for the best chef in the Mid-Atlantic reward.

She was nominated three more times between 2018 and 2020.

Philadelphia chefs Jesse Ito, of Royal Izakaya, a sushi restaurant, and Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon, from Kalaya Thai Kitchen, were semi-finalists for best chef in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Ellen Yin of Fork, a.kitchen and High Street Hospitality, was a finalist in the restaurateur of the year category.
